My father was making homemade vodka, barrels and bottles of it. When I was about 11 years old, I was already stealing the vodka from my dad and replacing it with water so he didn't notice. I was not a good kid and didn't listen to my parents, I got into lots of trouble. My dad was an alcoholic and by about age 13 I was too. Narcotics was an obvious follow-on and by the age of 16, I was already on a lot of drugs and involved in a lot of crime. Then I joined the army, and just met more people who exposed me to more drugs. I was posted in Moscow which was an absolute nightmare, you could just make one phone call and get whatever you wanted, it was too easy. But I was unhappy there and wanted to come home, and so we can see that God had his plan, because if I had stayed there then I would surely be dead. I felt God speaking to me about the new ministry.” Vika was on board with the idea and the leadership were supportive, so they put a plan into action. “We prepared some food and made some tea and put them in the car and drove. We were so enthusiastic!” Sergiy laughs. “We were going to feed everybody; we went all around Blagodatne, where we live, trying to find all these people that needed food. We went to the train station. There was nobody there. We went to the town centre - there was nobody there. Then he returned to his hometown of Uman in central Ukraine with plans to plant a church, but through unfolding global events, God unexpectedly led him in a very different direction. “When I moved back to Uman, we had a team with the vision to build a new church and we began the process. But then there was Covid, which was quite destructive to our work, and then there was the invasion, which stopped everything completely. The day the war started, there was a direct missile hit to the military base in Uman, which caused a fire. At the beginning I was driving minibuses and doing lots of evacuations. Then I organized something like a call centre: I was collecting lists of people wanting to evacuate, and connecting with drivers telling them where to pick people up and where to take them; I was on the phone all the time. At that point Camp Maximum was like a hub between east and west where people could come and stay for up to five days, have a shower, get food, clothes and medical supplies, before moving on. At the beginning, we only invited children from large and low-income families, and helped them with distance learning and homework. However, as we are on social media, news about the Centre quickly spread. Since there is a war going on and everyone needs support, we started accepting any children who want to come, and we now have more helpers and two separate groups: ages 5-7 years and 8-15 years. At first, my friends and I stayed with an elderly man, but he had problems with alcohol and because of this there were conflicts with him. Then one day, when we came to one of the churches, we were offered to move to another place and I chose the village of Blagodatne, where the local church invited me in. I was very well received. All the believers here love me and help me in every possible way with everything I need, so I feel very good here. I feel sure that Pastor Sergiy is a shepherd from God, because he is so kind and very attentive to the needs of all the refugees.
