Meeting their material needs

Since our ministry began in 1993 we have been doing all we can to meet the material needs of those we serve in Ukraine. We do this primarily through relationships, which are the foundation of our work.

How we help

Our pastors know their communities and are well-connected with the people who live there. Working through friendships and relationships, they identify needs and share them with us, and we support them and the church however we can to help meet those needs. Items such as furniture, household appliances, clothes and food are purchased in Ukraine and distributed as needed.

In recent years we have seen an increasing need for medical support in Ukraine. Health care can be expensive with only the very minimum covered by the state. Families of hospitalised patients must purchase medicine and even food for them - costs can quickly stack up. In partnership with our pastors, we are able to identify those who struggle to afford medical care and offer help.

Since the war began in 2022 we have seen that the winter season - with low temperatures and long hours of darkness - is very difficult to endure, especially for older people. So from November to February we raise extra funds to provide coats and boots, bedding, firewood, thermos flasks and other items to keep people warm.

Recognising that mental health is as important as physical well-being, we also support social initiatives that encourage connection, and combat isolation and loneliness. Read the impact story below for one example of how this is achieved.

Connecting Communities

Since winter 2024 a small team at Blagodatne church has been organising weekly ‘Connect’ meetings for pensioners in the village.

The first social gathering in the area to be offered for this age group, the fun and food served up have proved immensely popular. The aim is to provide a space for elderly people to find community, have hot meals and build friendships, ensuring that no one is left lonely or isolated.

As well as cooking up delicious meals, the dedicated group of church members who are responsible for the meetings are in a class of their own when it comes to devising games for the participants to enjoy. From blindfolded biscuit-decorating and picking up balls with chopsticks, to singing and quizzes - there is something for everyone.

Expressing her appreciation of the group, local resident Luba shared, "this meal is the best food that I eat all week. I cannot afford to buy meat and I often can't cook in my home". Another lady said, "there is nothing like this for us in the village, nowhere to gather together. Before this group I could go without spending time with anyone for weeks".
